Traffic crashes up second straight month in Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- Your risk of getting into a car accident is on the rise in Quincy.  That's because traffic crashes are up for a second straight month.

Quincy Police officers responded to 98 crashes in September.  That's 20 more than the same time last year.  The most crash prone intersection was once again 36th and Broadway, with a total of five crashes.  Sixth and Maine followed with three.

Quincy Police Officer Kelly VanderMaiden says there are several things drivers can do to avoid being in a crash.  She says, "Definitely slow down.  Always buckle up. Minimize distractions.  Stay alert.  Watch out for other drivers.  And being patient and courteous will help minimize accidents."

Friday was the busiest day of the week for traffic crashes.  But on the flip side, officers handed out fewer speeding tickets than last month and September of last year.
