The Bowling Green Police Department said it hopes to start interviewing finalists soon for the police chief's job.
City Administrator Dan Lang said the department had 21 applicants and the city is now asking that some of them submit formal applications. The city has now narrowed the list of candidates.
Lang said the mayor and the board of aldermen will decide how many candidates will be interviewed for the job.
"We would hope to have someone in place after the first of the year," Lang said.
Police Captain Dave Oney is serving as interim chief.
The new chief will replace Don Wickenhauser, who resigned earlier this year after four years on the job to take a similar position in the suburban St. Louis city of Rock Hill, Mo.
