How to keep utility costs down through the holidays

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - As you're preparing to put your holiday decorations and lights up this season, there's an easy way to save money on your electric bill.

Experts at Lowe's in Quincy said putting your electronic decorations and lights on timers is an easy way to save on energy and allow your items to cool down.

"The shorter intervals, the less heat build up you'll have when you're running then as well," said Sean Huff of Lowe's. "It won't actually save you heat as it's running but it will in the long run. Save your lights because they won't be as hot as they would be if you run them continuously."
But Huff said the easiest way to keep costs low is to use LED bulbs.

"LEDs are great for saving energy and they put out less heat. They're a lot safer bulb, they burn for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the amount of heat so they won't put out as much heat to burn your tree or anything," said Huff.

If you're already out shopping for Christmas lights, Sean Huff also recommends buying longer strands of lights, so you don't have to use as many outlets.

Huff also said it's a good idea to use heavier extension cords because they can handle more electricity.
