Three pigs killed in sow farm fire

PIKE COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) - An investigation is now underway for a fire Saturday morning at a Baylis Ill. sow farm, five miles north of Pittsfield.

The fire broke out in the office at the Maschhoff farming facility.

Employee Bob Oitker said no employees were injured in the fire, but three pigs were killed.

Oitker said they are fortunate they didn't lose more animals, but their safety is a top priority for the company.

The office building is a total loss, but the gestation barn received minimal damage, Oitker said.

The farm is located off 300th Avenue about five miles north of Pittsfield.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, according to Oitker.
