Camp Point teacher awarded WGEM Golden Apple

CAMP POINT, Ill. (WGEM)  --  Students at one local school district took the month of November to share just how thankful they are for one of their teachers.  We received dozens of nomination letters for this month's WGEM Golden Apple award.

She's a music teacher who never skipped a beat in the classroom, even while battling cancer.

The sounds of the Christmas holiday season fill the music room at Camp Point Central High School.  The band is preparing for its annual holiday concert, led by long time music director Chris Clevenger.

As rehearsal came to an end, WGEM was able to surprise Mrs. Clevenger with a WGEM Golden Apple during a school assembly.

Mrs. Clevenger teared up as students and staff gave her a standing ovation.  She's been teaching music for 29 years and says it's her love of music and her students that make every day special.

"It's the gratification you get everyday from the kids.  When you start a piece of music and you do a concert or you do a performance, you see it come to life," Mrs. Clevenger said.

But Mrs. Clevenger has been dealing with a very personal battle outside of the classroom.  Three years ago she was diagnosed with leukemia.

"I've been able to teach and I'm still in remission.  The school district has been wonderful to me.  They've allowed me time off to go to doctor's appointments.  They've been great."

But even during her battle with cancer, Mrs. Clevenger made it a point to continue dedicating her time to her students.

"That's why I do this, is for the kids.  I just love being in the classroom with them.  And when I'm gone to appointments it really bothers me because I want to be here in the classroom where it's fun," Mrs. Clevenger said.
