Costs of Macomb downtown revitalization higher than expected

The total projected cost of the Macomb downtown revitalization project is in and it's higher than expected.

Mayor Mike Inman says the Downtown Revitalization Committee agreed to move forward with the plan presented by Hutchinson Engineering, which comes to $4.25 million. The city's goal for the project was $3.5 million.

"The cost did come in higher than we expected," Inman said. "But we might be able to get that price down a little."

Inman says the issue will go before the city council Monday for a first reading and discussion will continue over the next couple weeks. He hopes to have the contract with the engineering firm finalized in January.

"We're required to have three readings so through discussion, there could a few changes along the way," Inman said.

The city is also hoping to receive funds from the Traffic Enhancement Grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation. The grant has a $2 million maximum, according to Inman.

The project is slated to begin in the spring of 2016.
