Towing companies brace for winter weather

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Winter weather hitting the Tri-States has the potential to make roads dangerous for drivers.  But local towing companies say it could be one of their busiest weekends of the year.

D.J. Peters at Niehaus Auto in Quincy says he's called in extra help for the weekend. Peters says he has six extra drivers on his weekend staff and he anticipates more than fifty calls over the weekend from drivers needing help. Peters says he gets around ten calls on a normal day.

Peters says he expects many of the wrecks to happen on rural roads.

"A lot of the black ice on the bridges and things like that isn't noticeable right off the bat, but your steering kind of locks up and I'll be pulling them out left and right," Peters said.

Peters reminds drivers that towing companies will be backed up this weekend and it could take a couple of hours to get someone out to help. He says it's a good idea to keep a warm blanket and extra supplies in the car.
