Local hotels expecting more cancellations due to weather

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The winter storm couldn't hit the Tri-States at a worse time, as millions of people are hitting the road on the last weekend before Christmas.

Local hotels say they expect to see less people walking through their doors this weekend. That's because with inclement weather on the way, hotel managers tell WGEM they're expecting to see more people canceling reservations.

Doug Lawson and his four year old daughter Kennedy are calling the Fairfield Inn & Suites home for the next couple of nights. Lawson is in town to visit family in Hull for the holidays. But he says the incoming storm may sideline those plans.

"It kind of looks like it could get a little nasty over the weekend, we've got the pool here, we can stay here and play, we've got plenty of supplies," Lawson says.

Deb Carstens, the General Manager of the Fairfield Inn, says the hotel has had a few cancellations already for the weekend.

"You know, a few people departing early, just to get on the road, and trying to get home before this weather hits," Carstens says.

Carstens says usually on weekends, all 63 rooms are booked solid. At one point Friday, she had 20 rooms open.

"I think people are just kind of holding back and kind of waiting to see what happens and see if they can get in," Carstens says.

As for the guests already at the hotel, if the weather gets too bad, Carstens has already stocked up to prepare for extended stays.

"We have water and supplies, kind of a back up plan that we always keep in place for our guests, so they can shelter in place if they need to," Carstens says.

If you have to cancel or re-schedule your hotel reservation this weekend because of the storm, there is usually a fee for that. However, Carstens says many hotels including the Fairfield Inn & Suites are working with customers to get around that.
