Many people ring in the new year with gym memberships

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Now that it's officially the new year, many people are buckling down to start their new year's resolutions, and a popular one is to get healthy.

Many people headed to the YMCA in Quincy on New Year's Day to take advantage of its $1 down payment deal for a membership.

The treadmills and elliptical machines were also full in the gym.

New members said they wanted to get a jump start on healthier habits this year.

"It's a good way to spend the winter," Debra McColez said.  "I'm going to be training for the Bridge The Gap race, so I thought it would be a good time to do this for the next six months."
