Diocese dedicates Latin parish in Quincy

The only Latin parish in the Springfield Diocese was dedicated Wednesday in Quincy.

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki performed the ceremony at a mass at St. Rose of Lima.

Ever mass is in traditional Latin.

The church was established Wednesday as a permanent personal parish in the diocese.

St. Rose reopened five years ago after being closed for three years. Paprocki says the dedication should bring some stability.

"I think people have that sense that this will be here for a while because we just don't establish a parish one day and then disestablish it in a short time," Paprocki said.
Parishioners say the dedication means a lot to them.

"It means we saved this church from being abandoned and I think it's actually a quite beautiful structure itself and everyone has worked hard to get it where it's at," Paul Wellman said.

Paprocki appointed Father Arnaud DeVillers from France as church pastor.
