Experts warn against washing cars in extreme cold

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Cars are getting caked in road salt and melting snow, but local auto experts suggest holding off on washing the car until temperatures are warmer.

State Street Lube and Maintenance Owner Glenn Predmore says if you wash your car in extremely cold conditions, your locks could freeze.

Predmore says melted snow can get into your locks and freeze, too, so preparedness is key.

"They do make a lock de-icer, which comes in a little can," Predmore said. "It's just an aerosol and it has something in there that won't freeze. Just put it in your lock, give it a squirt. It will thaw it out. but it's quite possible it could freeze again."

Predmore also says you should get something to displace the water in the lock like a silicone spray.
