BARRY, Ill. (WGEM) -
A Tri-State community is getting statewide attention for its efforts to put a vacant church to use.
Barry, Illinois received the Governor's Hometown Award after converting the old Holy Redeemer Church into the Western Community YMCA and further developing the neighboring Holy Redeemer Park. The award recognizes volunteers for their work in improving their communities.
YMCA Branch Director Bradley Longcor hopes the award will bring more people through the doors.
"It's pretty deceiving from the outside. It looks like a church and not much of a fitness facility," Longcor said. "Once you get in here you'll see we've got a lot of good equipment and it's a great place to work out."
Even though the facility is located in Barry, the Western Community YMCA is open to anyone in Pike County.
