QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Quincy University students gathered Saturday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by taking some time to serve their community.

More than 60 students signed up to participate in QU's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Saturday. Students met at 9 a.m. in the dining hall then went to volunteer at six different organization throughout Quincy.

"We want to continue that legacy for service for Dr. Martin Luther King and commemorating his memory as well as to show our service and our commitment here in Quincy to the Quincy community," Calvin Johnson, Director of Multicultural and Leadership Programs at Quincy University, said.

The projects included painting the facilities at Quanada and sorting clothes at the Salvation Army.

"Salvation Army is a big place here in Quincy and around the world, and I think that they need help here today," QU student Natalie Kuhlenberg said.

The day's events, organized by the university's Multicultural and Leadership Programs focused on the idea that Martin Luther King Day should be a day to reflect and serve the community.

"Martin Luther King did a lot for bringing together races and different cultures and so I believe, what other day is best to do this? Martin Luther King would love this if he was still here," QU student Marcia Finnie said.

Quincy University will host another event celebrating the life and work of Dr. King this Friday.
