Gun silencers legal in Iowa if bill becomes law

KEOKUK, Ia. (WGEM) - Gun silencers could be legal to buy in Iowa if a bill is passed by lawmakers.

Firearm silencers would be easier to get under new legislation that has advanced to the Iowa House.

Right now, the devices that muffle the sound of discharging firearms are included in a list of restricted weapons.

Bruce Scott of Scott's Gun Shop in Keokuk says he doesn't think the law would attract more crime if it passes.

"I don't see how it would be any more secretive with a silencer on a weapon," Scott said. "If somebody wanted to kill somebody or do something illegal, they're going to do it anyway so I don't think it's going to make that much difference on that."

Bruce Scott says he doesn't think many people would have a use for them.

Currently, it's a class D felony to use a silencer. The bill now moves to a Judiciary Committee.
