Western Illinois men's basketball head coach Jim Molinari won his 300th-career game on Thursday night when the Leathernecks topped South Dakota in Macomb.

MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -- In more ways than one, the Western Illinois men's basketball team needed a win entering Thursday night.

Since the calendar turned to 2014, the Leathernecks had just one victory in four tries.

The other reason -- They wanted to give their head coach, Jim Molinari, his 300th career win.

Western did just that with a 18-point pounding of visiting South Dakota ,a game in which the Leathernecks never trailed.

Molinari says it's a milestone and a night he won't soon forget.

"300 wins, I knew it would take me a while to get there because I kind of see my role in coaching as a builder," he expressed.

"When I look at my career, I've never been in a place that wasn't a building project."

"I knew it was going to take a long time, I was going to take a lot of losses, but I love building, so it's been great. "

Molinari has 77 of those 300 victories in Macomb.

His team will looks for two in a row when they face-off against Denver for the first time in program history on Saturday night at Western Hall.
