Hannibal crowed three state champions on Saturday, and took home a 4th place finish as a team.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (WGEM) -- They were incredible throughout the entire season, and in a matter of hours on Saturday at the class 3 state tournament, the Hannibal Pirates cashed in all of their hard work with the best finish in program history.
All in all, Hannibal racked up three individual state titles, five total medals, and a fourth place overall finish as a team.
There was no better storybook ending than the lone Pirate senior in the finals, Tyler Janes.
One year after losing in the championship match, Janes won the 126 pound title in dominating fashion by a 15-0 decision.
Janes told WGEM Sports that you couldn't have scripted it any better.
"It's been emotional knowing that this is my last week of high school wrestling for Hannibal, and I've been trying to prepare every way I can for the state tournament," he expressed.
"It hasn't really set in that I accomplished what I set out to do since my freshman year."
Along with Tyler Janes, Hannibal's Chandler Fohey won a second consecutive title at 120 pounds, Kyle Muehring was crowned a champion at 220 pounds, Colby Collings took second at 160 pounds, and Austin Janes grabbed 3rd place at 113 pounds.
Other than Tyler Janes, all of the Hannibal medallists were juniors, meaning the future couldn't be much brighter on the mats in America's Hometown.
