Person killed in rural Schuyler County fire identified

SCHUYLER COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) - The Illinois State Police crime lab has identified the body of a man who died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide when a fire destroyed a machine shed last month.

Sheriff Don Schieferdecker says David P. Zilly, 70, of Browning, died in the rural Schuyler County fire Feb. 26.

The crime lab identified the body using DNA analysis.

The call came in just after noon, when a neighbor noticed smoke coming from a machine shed at a farm four miles north of Bader.

Deputies responded, along with the Astoria Fire Department, but the building was completely destroyed when crews arrived.

After a deputy found Zilly's body on the floor by the living quarters of the building, the county coroner was called, along with the State Fire Marshal's Office and Illinois State Police CSI unit were called in to investigate.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, but Schieferdecker says he suspects no foul play in the fire or the death.
