QPS applies for grant to upgrade security at schools

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Quincy Public Schools has applied for a security grant from the state totaling $172,350. This comes from a statewide grant of $25 million, which is being awarded to public schools, colleges and universities across Illinois.

"Right now, unfortunately we don't know the personality of a lot of these visitors," Security Supervisor Dan Arns said.

Now Arns says they're looking into a new visitor management system that would essentially serve as a semi-background check.

"It'll pop up information about that person, if they were volatile in the past or a sex offender," Arns said.

Out of the $172,350 grant, Business Manager Joel Murphy says they're looking to spend at least $10,000 on each school building. The upgrades would include more security cameras, new metal detectors and electronic locks.

With the financial woes currently facing the district and state, Murphy says it's been difficult maintaining the funds upgrade safety equipment.

"Obviously we can always do a better job of security," Murphy said. "I think we've done a good job but this will take us to the next level and improve what we're currently doing."

The deadline to apply for the grant is Friday. Murphy says they're hoping to hear if they have been awarded the funding by May 1.
