Quincy School Board implementing harsher grade promotion policies

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The Quincy School Board announced it will implement stricter policies when it comes to passing your child on to the next grade.

At Wednesday night's school board meeting, Board President Stephanie Erwin says the district isn't pleased with the amount of struggling students getting sent to the next level.
Erwin says the district recently sent letters to parents informing them that if their child is more than a year behind in reading, they might be held back.

"If we catch them early, that's definitely going to help, like here at Quincy Jr. High and Quincy Senior High," Erwin said. "I do think we need to give parents notice and I think the parents that we are talking with now, we will give them the option of whether or not they would like to hold their child back."

Erwin says the district plans to fully implement the stricter policies next school year.
