Nitro Joe visits Veterans Elementary to get kids interested in science

HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) - It wasn't your typical science class at Veterans Elementary Thursday evening as a famous scientist made his way into the school.

The gymnasium was full as Joe Higgs, also known as "Nitro Joe", gave kids a whole new look at science and explained how he uses it to disprove certain magic tricks.  Higgs said keeping science entertaining gives kids a reason to pursue it later in life.

"Every kid wants to be a fighter pilot or a police officer or fireman because those things look really cool, especially basketball players and football players.  However, when you make science really cool and they see all the neat things they can do and they can really get their teeth in their early and do something neat with their life," Higgs said.

"Nitro Joe" has done shows for the last 27 years and performs for schools all over the Midwest.
