Building owner: Small fire reignited to start old Tate Cheese building fire

Posted:
VALLEY CITY, Ill. (WGEM) - The owner of the former Tate Cheese facility in Valley City, Illinois says a small fire that was put out earlier Thursday smoldered and later caught fire that destroyed one of Pike County's landmark businesses.

Owner Brian Bradshaw says workers inside the building were using cutting torches to remove scrap metal earlier in the afternoon Thursday, when a small fire started. Bradshaw tells WGEM News that fire was extinguished and later reignited.

Crews responded to a call at 7:41 p.m. to reports of smoke coming from the building before the fire spread throughout the property. Eleven fire departments from Pike, Brown, Morgan and Cass counties were on the scene for over four hours managing the fire.
