Macomb Airport gets new lighting

Crews are working to brighten things up at the Macomb Municipal Airport.

Crews began installing new LED lighting along the runways and taxiways.

Airport chairman Bill Butcher says the new lights will pay themselves back in cost savings over 10 years, along with having less maintenance and possibly less insurance costs.

The brighter lights will also be safer for pilots. He says advances in technology are the biggest driver behind the upgrades.

"Our old electrical system was about 25 to 35 years old," Butcher said. "In that amount of time, we've expanded the airport several times, put in newer items; so it was time, just like anything."

Butcher says the project should be finished by late April.  90 percent of the cost is being funded by federal grants, with the remaining money coming from state and local dollars.
