QPS teachers share what to expect during Friday's Kindergarten Roundup

Posted:
QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The first day of school can be scary for a child and a parent, but one event hopes to ease the worry.

Friday is the Quincy Public School Kindergarten Roundup. Children who will be five before or on September 1st will get to visit the school they will attend, meet with teachers, and talk with current students. Kindergarten teacher Amy Kuhle at Ellington says this event can help prepare you and your child before school this fall.

"You want to be prepared and you want to know what is coming up for your child," Kuhle said. "It's going to help alleviate some fears that your child has about coming to kindergarten. As a parent, you definitely just want to be in the know. It's a short little day and it's a lot of fun. You're going to get a lot of information and feel more comfortable about starting your child in the district."

Kuhle says this event can make that first real day of school a lot less scary.

"Some kids don't go to any daycare or preschool," Kuhle said. "So this is their first real experience outside of their home and they don't know what to expect. So they get a little idea. They get to meet us and see that we're real people. We are not scary. We are fun to be around. We try to definitely make a great environment."

Kuhle says the current kindergarten class will interact with the visiting children and play games with them to make them feel more at home in the school. She also says parents are going to learn about school policies, requirements for physicals and immunization shots and also any other questions they may have.

The times for each school are:

Adams - 9:00 a.m.

Berrian - 9:30 a.m.

Dewey - 12:00 p.m.

Ellington - 9:15 - 11:00 a.m.

Madison - 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. (Meet in cafeteria)

Monroe - 9:15 a.m.
