A 13-person search committee has been created to fill the vacant boys basketball coach position at Quincy High School.

The coaching vacancy was created when Sean Taylor was fired on March 26. He went 194-107 as the Blue Devils’ coach in 11 seasons.

The Quincy Public Schools announced in a news release that School Board member Sayeed Ali will chair the search committee. Former standout QHS basketball players Bruce Douglas, Kyle Cartmill, Larry Moore, John Ernst and Andy Waggoner are on the committee.

Other members are Bill Sanders, athletic director at QHS; Kerry Anders, former QHS girls basketball and track coach; Dick Wentura, longtime timekeeper at QHS games; Dave Boster, human resources director for Quincy Public Schools; Paul Koscielski, Floyd Robbins and Steve Bybee.
Search committees that were contacted by declined to comment.

A news conference is scheduled for April 7 at 9 a.m. at the Board of Education office.

Taylor was hired as the boys basketball coach in 2003 to replace Loren Wallace. Taylor previously had been the basketball coach at Macomb High School.

He took over a QHS program that was put on probation by the Illinois High School Association when Wallace violated IHSA bylaws regarding the recruiting of players. He has a career record of 461-210 in 24 seasons as a basketball coach and was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012.

QHS lost to Edwardsville in the regional championship game this past season; the Tigers finished fourth in the Class 4A state tournament.
The Blue Devils have not won a regional championship in five seasons, the longest drought in program history.
