QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -
With the tax deadline a week away, some of you are probably making some last minute calculations for returns.
Here are some tips before you file. Beware of scams. The IRS stresses they will never contact tax payers through unsolicited e-mail or social media. Another thing to watch for, especially in the Tri-States, is the procedure for paying multiple state taxes.
"Since Illinois raised its tax rate a couple of years ago, if you do live in Illinois but work in a different state you may be able to set it up to get the refund from the state where you worked but you'll most commonly owe Illinois now," tax advisor Carrie Bareis said.
Not to be overlooked, math errors cost a number of tax payers each year so double check your numbers.
