LINCOLN, Neb. (WGEM) -- Calling it "the hardest decision of my college basketball life," Jim Molinari stepped down as the Western Illinois men's basketball coach on Thursday night.

Molinari said he didn't completely make up his mind until Thursday afternoon. A few hours later he informed his Leatherneck players.

The reason why he's leaving Macomb was officially announced on Friday.

Molinari is joining forces with good friend Tim Miles and his University of Nebraska program as an assistant coach.

Molinari told WGEM Sports late Thursday the goal now is to try and win Big Ten titles and a national championship.

"Adding Coach Molinari to our staff can help elevate us to the next level..he's a great person and a great coach," Miles said.

Molinari leaves Western having won 79 games in six seasons while producing the only two postseason appearances while the program has played at the NCAA Division I level.
