QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The Radio Television Digital News Association has announced WGEM News is the winner of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.

The regional awards were announced Tuesday and recognize the best electronic journalism produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world.

"This is a great honor and a testament to the hard work our staff puts in every day," News Director Chad Mahoney said. "Many of our journalists are Tri-State natives and knowing that they're working for their neighbors and families gives them the extra drive to achieve excellence. We are very humbled by this recognition."

WGEM was judged along with multiple stations across numerous states, including stations in much larger markets than the Tri-State area.

The RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.

"The Murrow Awards honor journalism at its finest," RTDNA Executive Director Mike Cavender said. "Local newsrooms serve their communities 365 days a year, and we're proud to recognize the great work they do."

RTDNA received more than 4,000 entries during the 2014 awards season, surpassing 2013 by more than 500 entries and setting an all-time record for entries in what proved to be one of the most competitive Edward R. Murrow Awards seasons in RTDNA history.
