QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- The six-week long search for a new boys basketball coach at Quincy High School has officially come to an end.

The Quincy Board of Education voted 5-1 in favor of Andy Douglas' appointment during a special meeting on Thursday evening.

The only 'no' vote came from board member Bud Niekamp who said he couldn't vote in favor without an executive session and one board member was not present for the meeting.

Search committee co-chair and school board member Sayeed Ali says it's an exciting time for the program.

"It's impressive how impressive (Douglas) is. He's excellent at what he does," Ali indicated. "We look at him as a role model (as a teacher)."

Douglas spent the last four seasons with the Liberty program and won 83 games as head coach, including a pair of regional championships.

His hiring is a homecoming of sorts considering Douglas is a Quincy High School alum, former Blue Devil basketball player, and former assistant coach.

"He's a winner. I think we're in good hands," Ali said.

Douglas was not present at Thursday's school board meeting and denied WGEM's request for an interview. School board president Stephanie Erwin spoke with him by phone earlier this week and Douglas told her: "This is a dream come true."

Douglas will speak during a press conference on Friday which begins at 7 p.m. at Blue Devil Gym.
