9th Annual 12 Hours of Giving Blood Drive is May 22

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - For the American Red Cross, summer means a decrease in blood donations as families take off for family vacations.

The Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Quincy held a blood drive Thursday with at least a dozen people in attendance. Morgan Waterkotte, with the Quincy Red Cross, says they are gearing up for their 9th Annual 12 Hours of Giving Blood Drive which will take place next Thursday, May 22.

Waterkotte says they're encouraging people to make appointments to donate live saving blood.

"Blood is constant, it has a shelf life," Waterkotte said. "There's a constant need everyday for blood products. So every donation we can get helps. Especially going into the summer and coming off of the farming season. We've had a lot of our regular donors not able to come out."

Waterkotte says they're hoping for about 200 people to come out to the blood donation center next Thursday at 3000 North 23rd Street in Quincy.
