Veterans return home after 25th Great River Honor Flight

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Veterans on the Great River Honor Flight returned around 11 p.m. for a warm homecoming at John Wood Community College. The trip marks a total of 772 local veterans that have taken the free trip.

A motorcade of motorcycles met and joined them at different points along their route from the St. Louis airport. People also waited along the route in large groups at intersections and parking lots to cheer them on and salute them as they passed.  Once the bus arrived at JWCC, the vets received a warm heroes' welcome from the crowd of friends, family and community members.

The mission departed from JWCC around 2 a.m. Veterans and guardians took a charter bus to St. Louis Lambert International Airport, boarded a flight to Baltimore, and then on to Washington D.C.

Of the 32 local veterans traveling on this 25th mission, 26 served in Korea and six were in Vietnam. Among those going is a family of three: A father, who served in Korea, his son, who served in Vietnam, and another son, who is a veteran of the Gulf War. 23 of the veterans are from Illinois, eight are from Missouri and one is from Iowa. These veterans represent Adams, Hancock, McDonough, Pike, Van Buren, Fulton and St. Francois counties.

There are 24 guardians on the trip. Guardians volunteer their time and pay their own way to cover travel costs. Their focus is to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for each veteran.
The program offers one-day trips to Washington D.C. for our local heroes at no cost to them. The not-for-profit corporation was established in 2009, and was created to honor veterans that live in our area.
