Illinois Secretary of State presents Macomb Public Library with $2.3 million check

MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) - Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White was in Macomb today to present grants for library renovation and repair.

In his role as state librarian, White brought $2.3 million to the Macomb Public Library.

"This building was built in 1903 and is in need of repair, is in need of expansion and with the $2.3 million that we gave today, it's going to help them towards that end," said White.

"We had to raise 25% of the grant and we had to raise it before June 30th last year," said Dennis Danowski, Library Director at the Macomb Public Library.

The money comes from a Public Library Construction Act Grant and will be used to build a new wing and to update the current building.

Mayor of Macomb, Michael Inman said, "It's a reinvestment in our historic downtown. We're so happy that the Library Board of Trustees made that decision."

While the additions to the library are set to make a large impact on the community, it's also very significant for kids some of whom come to check out a book every week.

"One day they're going to run this country of ours and we want to make sure we give them the opportunity and the tools that are necessary for that to occur," said White.

Besides the children's section, there will also be a level for adults. Construction is projected to be finished around Christmas.

"Brick and mortar libraries are here to stay and are a vital part of our community and we couldn't agree with that more," said Inman.

The Colchester District Library also received a $35,000 Live and Learn Construction Grant to repair its building.
