Pike County, Illinois, board approves new state's attorney

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) - Residents of Pike County have a new state's attorney after the county board approved a replacement during a special meeting Thursday afternoon.

Chairman Andy Borrowman says board members approved Matt Goetten, of Greene County, Illinois, with a 6-2 vote. Goetten is expected to start his new position immediately after being sworn in to office Friday afternoon.

"It's nice to, hopefully, get things settle down a little around here," Borrowman said. "Now we can move forward with regular business."

Goetten was previously a special prosecutor for the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor's Office and had been assisting in several Pike County cases over the past several months.

Borrowman says Judge Frank McCartney reached out to the Appellate Prosecutor's Office and started process that lead to Goetten's approval Thursday.

Borrowman says Goetten will be in office until Nov. 30. Goetten could run for the office, but Borrowman doesn't anticipate him running. Borrowman says the Republican and Democratic parties in Pike County will each be able to place a candidate on the November ballot. The deadline to do so is Aug. 27.

Independent candidates will be able to run if they file between June 16 and 26. Anyone who took a party ballot in the last primary election will not be able to run as an independent, according to Borrowman.

Goetten replaces former state's attorney Carrie Boyd, who resigned earlier this month because of personal and family reasons. The resignation came weeks after Boyd filed a felony misconduct charge against Pike County Sheriff Paul Petty.
