Veterans prepare for upcoming Great River Honor Flight mission

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Great River Honor Flight is gearing up to take off on its next mission next week.

The mission will depart from John Wood Community College around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

Veterans and guardians will take a charter bus to St. Louis Lambert International Airport, where they'll take a flight to Baltimore, and then will travel to Washington D.C.

Of the 32 local veterans traveling on this mission, 26 served in Korea and six were in Vietnam.

Some of the Veterans are going on the trip as a family.

"Two of us Vets are going. My dad is a Korean Vet and I'm a Vietnam Vet," Randy Rayl said. "My brother is going. He's a retired Navy Lieutenant and he's going and he was in the Gulf War. They're coming home from Florida to go on this flight with us."

It will mark the 25th mission of the program, and on its return, 772 local veterans will have taken the free trip.
