Judge to revisit case against sheriff, special prosecutor named

Petty Petty

Pike County, Illinois, Sheriff Paul Petty is scheduled to appear in court Friday on charges of official misconduct, after a special prosecutor was assigned his case. Edwin Parkinson, of the Office of the State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor, will determine the status of the case when he appears before Judge Chet Vahle, of Adams County.

Vahle said the new prosecutor will have the power to pursue charges against Petty, or drop them. A criminal felony charge was filed against Petty last month, alleging official misconduct and failure to perform duties, court records state.

Petty is accused of official misconduct for an alleged action while serving as coroner. Former State's Attorney Carrie Boyd claimed Petty ordered a body to be embalmed before a toxicology test could be performed.

The case in question involves John Edgar, who is accused of selling Milton resident Shandra Lopez heroin back in 2012. She later died of an overdose. Edgar was charged with drug-induced homicide. However, a plea agreement discussed in court Friday would change Edgar's charges to involuntary manslaughter.
