WGEM named Station of the Year for Broadcasting Excellence

WGEM-TV received top honors at the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s annual awards banquet held in Champaign Wednesday night.
WGEM News was nominated as a finalist for six awards over dozens of other entries from stations throughout Illinois.
The highlight of the night was the “Station of the Year” announcement, awarded to WGEM for overall excellence.
“The last time WGEM received this prestigious honor was the year after the devastating 1993 floods," WGEM Vice-President and General manager Carlos Fernandez said. “That recognition was due to the extensive efforts and role that our station played by being the vital source of news and information for the entire region.  This year, our focus remains being prepared for reporting on major events, but also on the day-to-day support of the communities we serve throughout the Tri-States.  From Academic Challenge, to televising parades, to the Great River Honor Flight program, our entire staff is committed to making this area a great place to live.”
In addition, WGEM’s “Breaking News” coverage of a severe weather storm and the Newcomb Hotel fire garnered the station First and Second Place Silver Domes in the category of “Best Television Spot News Coverage.”
"We take our role as local journalists very seriously every day, but especially so during situations like the severe weather outbreak and the Newcomb Hotel fire when we know people are counting on us for emergency information," News Director Chad Mahoney said. “Receiving an award such as this only motivates our journalists to work harder to better inform our viewers.”
The station also took home awards in several other categories: Best Community Service Activity (Weather Storm Spotters Course), Best TV Website, Best TV Public Service Announcement (Great River Honor Flight), and “Heroin in the Heartland” was recognized in the Best Hard News Story category.
