Local leaders, educators team up to better prepare students for workforce

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The workforce has changed over the years, and an event Tuesday aims to help educators and business leaders better prepare students for the workforce.

A workforce development symposium will be held at Hannibal LaGrange University.  Northeast Missouri, business leaders, legislators and other members will meet to discuss how to better ready high school and college graduates for the workforce. Northeast Missouri Development Partnership Vice President Mark Grieshaber says this event unites educators with business leaders.

"It's about the educators and the business community collaborating," Grieshaber said. "I think it's important that business leaders get involved in the education process. There are some proven success stories out there about that."

Grieshaber says this is a way for schools to see how to apply what they are teaching in the classroom with students to the workforce after students have graduated.

Participants plan to hear from keynote speakers, hold a discussion panel and have break out sessions to find out what is needed in the area. Cathy Codd-Bower with John Wood Community College says working with businesses on education programs helps set students apart.

"I think it prepares them to be the kind of employee that employers are actually looking for," Codd-Bower said. "They're coming in with a set of skills that other individuals don't have."

Codd-Bower says events like this help John Wood continue to change and develop their programs to best fit the needs in the area. She says the trade programs like manufacturing and welding are forms of cooperative work study where they teach students skills employers are looking for while learning about the trade.
