Macomb mayor selects replacement for longtime council member

Macomb Mayor Mike Inman has selected the replacement for longtime 3rd Ward alderman Lou Gilbert, who passed away last month.

Inman announced at Monday night's committee of the whole meeting that he will nominate Gilbert's widow, Melvina. The nomination will be voted on at the July 7 council meeting.

"There was consensus reached during discussions with council members," Inman said. "We feel (Melvina) is a good fit, given her husband's background in Macomb."

Gilbert will fill the vacancy until the term expires April 30, 2015. Inman says there's no indication Gilbert will run for the seat in next the election, which comes next April.

Inman still knew Gilbert was his first choice, whether she runs in April or not.

"It was my intention from the very beginning to reach out to Melvina and her family," Inman said. "I think she was overwhelmed and humbled when I asked her about filling the seat."

Lou Gilbert held the 3rd Ward seat in Macomb since 2001.
