Highway 79 near Hannibal could close because of flooding

The stretch of Highway 79 south of Hannibal typically floods when waters get high, and MoDOT officials say they could close the road this weekend.

Officials say water levels are not high enough and the road is clear, but crews could have to close the road as early as Sunday. Highway 79 often floods near  Sawyer's Creek, south of Hannibal, when water levels on the Mississippi River increase to flood stage.

Officials say when water does go over the road they need to close it for safety reasons.

If you want to see if the road is closed go to www.modot.org. Detour signs will be posted if the road is closed.
