Proposed bill would allow you to keep your cellphone when you switch providers

KEOKUK, Ia. (WGEM) - Is your smartphone in great condition and you want to switch companies, but the new company won't let you keep your current phone?

A proposed federal law would change that.

The bill would allow people to unlock their phones and move their service to a new provider. Sponsors of the bill say it would make it easier for people to switch companies when their contracts are up.
One mother says if the law passed it could help save her family money by unlocking her daughter's cellphone.

"With my Verizon, we have a couple of phones on it and we actually pay less for the more phones than we pay for her one phone and so if we could just unlock hers and switch it we could just add her on our plan," Heather Lefler said.

A Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill this week, pushing it closer to a broader vote.
