Decision on 48th Street roundabout now in city's hands

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Adams County Engineer Jim Frankenhoff told board members Tuesday night that changes to the intersection at 48th and State Street in Quincy is now in the city's hands.

Quincy City Engineer Jeffrey Conte says based on traffic congestion in the area, the city will move forward with one of two options: a roundabout or traffic lights. However, Conte says the options need to be discussed further with engineers before a final decision is made.

"We're going to have to either go down to three lanes, and make it three lanes for the traffic signals, or expand it to five lanes. So right now, we're looking at how much ground we'd have to acquire to do that and what the cost is going to be. There will obviously be a lot of earth work if we have to go wider."

Conte says construction at the intersection is not expected to begin until 2016, at the earliest. He says a big factor in deciding which route to go will be cost and public opinion.
