QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- The chip on the shoulders of the Quincy Gems is significant.

Spend a few minutes with the boys of summer and you will find out the fact they didn't win the West Division's first half title is especially discouraging.

However, the Gems understand they're still in control of their postseason destiny and entered Wednesday's contest against first half champ Danville with a 1.5 game lead on Terre Haute for the final spot in the Prospect League playoffs. (Note: Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Danville trimmed Quincy's lead to one game in the West Division)

"We kind of got screwed out of winning the first half (title). The second half, it looks like we'll wind up winning it, if we keep playing the way we're playing right now," Gems pitcher Geoff Hartlieb said.

"These are big games. We've got Terre Haute this weekend and if we win (those) games we'll probably win the division because they're right behind us."

According to Quincy outfielder Dominic Miles, "I really want (to win) a (championship) ring and I know the other guys do too. Some of the guys are going home but the guys that are staying we want rings, so why not us?"

The Gems begin a three-game series with Terre Haute on Thursday at home followed by two more games with the Rex on the road, meaning Quincy could gain separation in the race for the second half title.

Gems pitcher and utility player Kyle Cedotal says it's encouraging to know they've got something to aim for down the stretch.

"Playing for a championship, no matter where you're at or what division, even if you're playing foosball it doesn't matter, it's exciting," Cedotal explained.

"Hopefully we get to play Danville in the playoffs and make a run at (a championship), and maybe win a ring."

For the Gems, only 11 games are left in the regular season - five at home and six on the road.
