Quincy entrepreneur hopes $10,000 award will help business venture

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Have you always wanted to open your own business here in the Tri-States?

Well, one lucky entrepreneur got a financial boost to start hers in Quincy.

The Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce announced Dr. Kristen Kanoy Spear as the 2014 winner of the business plan competition. Contestants had to create detailed business plans that were developed and analyzed by experts.

Spear is a veterinarian and she plans to open up a mobile veterinary clinic called "Paws At Home," where she will make house calls to treat animals.

She says she saw a need for the specialized business in the area.

"For the elderly or people recovering from surgery or busy families that can't pack up the kids and can't get to the traditional clinic," Kanoy Spear said. "This would be a good opportunity to take good care of their animals and not have to worry about all the logistics of getting to the clinic."

Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amy Looten says this contest gives participants an opportunity to create a vision for their business ventures.

"A good business plan is the basis for your whole company," Looten said. "It's a road map that tells you where you are, whether you are improving or not, where you are going in the future. So, we think the actual development of the business plan is crucial."

If you are interested in entering the contest next year you should contact the Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce by April. Spear will open her business October 1.
