QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Quincy's medical marijuana dispensary Herbal Remedies LLC has taken arguably its biggest step toward becoming fully operational.

Following a detailed inspection on Tuesday, the facility is now officially licensed by the state of Illinois.

The long term business project was somewhat of a gamble for Manager Andy Schnack, dependent upon several factors including continued fluctuation in legislation and lack of awareness both politically and publicly.

With the heavy lifting in the rear view mirror, Schnack says its great to see years of hard work pay off.

"We've been working on this for two years trying to get everything in place, trying to get all of our policies, procedures, our security measures, and our staff," he said. "The state came down (on Tuesday) and we had to prove ourselves to them. We proved ourselves and not only did we do that I think we impressed them with everything that we put together."

Schnack and the Herbal Remedies staff had been taking every last detail into account over those two years and now plans to open the doors in roughly one month.

The final step is awaiting product from cultivation centers where the marijuana is grown.

"I do anticipate that we'll open up our doors a week or two before medicine is available," he said. "That way patients can come in, get familiar with the staff, get familiar with the dispensary and how the whole process works. As soon as medicine becomes available we can open our doors and start serving our patients."

Schnack says if you're someone with a condition that could benefit from medical marijuana, the first step is to talk to your doctor.

He also says Herbal Remedies is continuing to hold seminars at local hospitals and clinics to educate and help answer as many questions as possible, as they try to make the process of prescribing medical cannabis as smooth as possible for both doctors and patients that would apply.
