NEW CANTON, Ill. (WGEM) -

Pike County Sheriff's Office said 40-year-old Michael Winchell of Pleasant Hill, Illinois died Saturday evening after logging equipment fell on top of him.

The office said it happened near 236 Avenue in New Canton, Illinois.

Sgt. David Greenwood said a log skidder was clearing lumber from the timber and at some point, it fell on top of Winchell.

Sergeant David Greenwood said Winchell was pulled out by co-workers before first responders arrived on scene.

"The first person on the scene was working with the gentleman who is deceased," he said. "He ran up on it and he saw the guy. He went to a local resident here and knocked on his door and they called 9-1-1."

The New Canton Fire Department, Hull-Kinderhook Fire Department, Barry Fire Department, Pike County Ambulance Service and Pike County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.

Winchell was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation is underway.

More information will come out as it becomes available.
