QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

There have been multiple confirmed cases of heartworm found in pets around Quincy this summer.

Robert Reich with Animal Medical Clinics is urging all owners to use the prevention treatment immediately.

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and Reich said it only takes one warm afternoon for one to come out and bite.

He said new testing can detect the disease quicker which can lead to faster treatment.

"Heartworms have been a bad problem and these are two areas of town where people do everything they can for pets," Reich said. "I think people need to be aware, they need to be on a monthly prevention and use it year round, especially with it being mosquito season."

Signs of heartworm can be mild or severe.

Reich said symptoms include cough and tiredness after activity.

He said if owners don't practice regular prevention, it could cost the owner more than a thousand dollars in treatment.

Heartworms can lead to death if left untreated.
