QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

You may see more work being done at the new Adams County Jail site.

An Archaeologist is digging up grave shafts on the site to locate and remove human remains. The archaeologist previously worked to find how many graves could still be on the grounds because it used to be a cemetery in the 1800's.

So far, jail officials say five of the 12 grave shafts are empty, but they know five remains will be found. Officials hope it gets done soon so construction can begin.

"Prior even to the construction, we have gas lines to put in, water lines to run, we're moving the AT&T cable as we speak," Jail subcommittee member Kent Snider said. "So there's still work going on."

Officials say the archaeologist expects to be finished by the end of July.
