HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

MoDOT officially announced Monday that the half-cent sales tax to make part of highway 36 from Hannibal to Macon a 4-lane highway will end. Officials said that's three years before expected. The four counties in the district will receive extra money from the expired tax.

Marion County presiding commissioner Lyndon Bode said they can use that on local road projects.

"Just dividing by population the city of Hannibal, the city of Palmyra and then we have part of Monroe City, and then the rural part, the unincorporated areas," Bode said. "We'll divide out a check to those entities saying spend it on road projects."

Officials said each of the four counties, Marion, Monroe, Macon and Shelby, will receive around $100,000 in June of 2018.
