QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Quincy Public Schools Superintendent Roy Webb said on Monday that both sides are closer to resuming negotiations on a three-year tentative contract.

Even though there is still no deal in place, Webb said the talks remain positive between the two sides.

Both the district and union met Monday morning to discuss some of the issues that prevented the tentative agreement from passing.

While the board couldn't get into specifics, union officials previously said health care costs remain one of the biggest issues.

Webb said with the first day of school only weeks away, both sides remain hopeful that a three-year deal can be reached. Webb said it would be one less thing for teachers to worry about.

"They're trying to get classrooms ready." Webb said. "Some of them are in brand new classrooms this year so they're trying to get those ready. So I mean there's a lot to be done. This is one piece, but this is probably the most important thing we need to do right now."

Webb added that while there isn't a set date on when formal negotiations will begin again, union officials are expected to speak with their membership to decide what issues to talk about.
