HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

Several Hannibal residents in need are getting fresh vegetables for free thanks to a community project.

The Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen in Hannibal has been reaping the benefits of the Victory Over Hunger community garden. Organizers said it's helped feed dozens throughout the community.

The garden has been producing vegetables such as peppers, lettuce, and radishes for the soup kitchen since it started back in May. The vegetables then get handed out to people after they eat at the kitchen.

Organizers said it's nice to give people a healthy option.

"We really appreciate it," Loaves and Fishes coordinator Gene Seward said. "The people appreciate it. People have come in just to say 'Thank you.' It's a true blessing.

We really do need it, and they need it too.

The soup kitchen is open Monday through Friday at 5 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, located at 901 Broadway in Hannibal.
