LA GRANGE, Mo. (WGEM) -

LaGrange, Missouri, voters will decide next week if a tax will be put on residents' out-of-state purchases.

The "use tax" is a sales tax put on purchases made outside Missouri on taxable items that will be used in the state and which no tax was collected, like when you shop online. Officials said having the tax will help pay for projects such as road improvements.

"It ends up giving us an increase of revenue," city administrator John Roach said. "Little towns struggle a lot of the time to stay financially stable. Having an extra source of revenue is always a good thing."

Roach said right now, they wouldn't make much money on the tax, but if online shopping continues to grow, that could change.

The election will take place Aug 8. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
